Revitalization
In many cities across the nation, marginalized neighborhoods are being revitalized or gentrified. Urban renewal is paradoxical as it bolsters commerce and revives neglected neighborhoods. However, when renewal runs amuck, the repercussion is that native inhabitants, at times, become displaced.
With an analytical lens, my work seeks to capture the instability of many urban communities as they undergo demographic change. As I consider urban revitalization and gentrification in my work, my pain and sense of purpose arises from the empathy I feel for displaced and vulnerable people. Urban revitalization processes may herald a loss of economic prosperity, stability, and culture for many African American communities.
All of these works are acrylic on canvas or acrylic and mixed media on canvas.
